Elementary School Environmental Awareness Program

Environmental awareness program to engage schools and students on the 3Rs hierarchy

From 2016 – 2020 more than 750,000 students from across Canada took action to reduce plastic waste in their school communities while collecting more than 65 metric tonnes of single-use plastic bags for recycling.
During Earth Month, schools were challenged to learn and take action on plastics waste by reducing their use, while collecting discarded plastic bags (that cannot be reused) for recycling in their schools and beyond to be dropped at Walmart locations across Canada.

To maintain value of the material collected in the Plastic Bag Grab and demonstrate the viability of domestic markets, every plastic bag collected in the challenge was processed and remanufactured in Canada for use in new products, including ground stabilization grids for stables to prevent flooding.
