Canada's Circular Silver Lining

As Canada’s economy changes, circular solutions can help strengthen local value, build resilience, and create a more sustainable future.

Today’s economic disruption and uncertainty have brought an unexpected silver lining: they have prompted Canadians to respond in positive and surprising ways. The alarm bells have woken us to the need to champion homegrown innovation and have sharpened our focus on the strength of small businesses, valued industries, and abundant natural resources. They have also inspired us to reflect on what it means to be Canadian: respect and care for one another, and for the spectacular natural environment we share.

As we revisit our principles and recalibrate our economy with new partners, new opportunities, and a renewed focus, circular economy solutions are emerging as a powerful strategy. They can advance new economic priorities while delivering, in equal measure, on the things that matter beyond prosperity.

Across the country, these strategies are taking hold one by one. Governments are adopting circular roadmaps that link affordability and procurement to local economic growth that respects environmental limits. Businesses of all sizes are building resilience by shortening supply chains and adopting circular business models that lower production costs while growing local demand. Consumers, meanwhile, are looking for value: rethinking their spending habits, seeking out local options, stretching their dollars with second-hand goods and taking part in the growing repair economy.

The current Build Canada and Buy Canada movements are well placed to put the principles of a circular economy into practice. Knowingly or not, Canada is joining its global peers in building an economy with a purpose that goes beyond wealth to value.
