The countdown is on! As we head into August, CIC is excited to be gearing up for Canada’s premier campaign dedicated to educating and engaging about the circular economy.

This October will mark the 25th anniversary of the annual campaign (originally established as Waste Reduction Week in Canada in 2001), with communications reflecting on progress made and looking ahead to what’s needed to build a more circular, resilient future.

There are endless opportunities for governments, organizations, and businesses of all sizes to participate in the month-long celebration:

Plan and register events like community repair cafés, swaps, informative webinars, interactive installations, documentary screenings, and collection drives.
Join hundreds of organizations contributing to the conversation online using the hashtag #CircularEconomyMonth, engaging 5 million+ Canadians. Plan your communications in alignment with the campaign program which features weekly themes, each focused on different benefits of the circular economy. Promotional assets are available in early August.
Participate in the 25th anniversary video by submitting short video clips reflecting on circular advancements in your organization or community, and impacts made over the past quarter century.
Engage and motivate your audience to take action through interactive games, challenges, and Circular Economy 101 info sessions.
Support activation of the annual campaign through a donation or sponsorship.

Upcoming Webinar Series: Digital Resilience

As the AI boom accelerates, government and enterprise IT leaders are being challenged by escalating fees for digital services and cloud computing capacity, while office ICT hardware costs are also facing price hikes driven by competition for electronic components due to data centre growth.

Meanwhile, climate and sustainability goals and public trust are under severe strain as digital infrastructure comes up against resource and supply chain constraints.

Circular strategies can support ICT operational and capital cost reduction, and are critical to addressing interconnected challenges of operational energy use and emissions, equipment and infrastructure decarbonization, and strategic supply chain resilience for critical minerals and materials. This webinar series will explore:

How energy and other sustainability reporting requirements can support digital services management to improve utilization rates, digital service right-sizing, and operational sustainability
How extending hardware lifecycles – though circular strategies including reuse/as-a-service, repair, or refurbishment – can reduce equipment refresh costs while significantly reducing embodied carbon over the life cycle
How to maximize value recovery at end of equipment (first) life while strengthening strategic resilience through critical mineral and metal recovery
Case studies of circular procurement as the strategic lever to advance these combined opportunities.

Construction Waste Diversion Pilot Shows Promising Results

In partnership with Azimuth Builders and Wilco Disposal, a new pilot project has demonstrated that a significant portion of construction waste can be diverted from the landfill through practical, on-site sorting and material recovery.

The pilot achieved a 21 per cent diversion rate, keeping nearly one-quarter of construction waste out of the landfill. The project also identified opportunities to increase diversion rates to more than 50 per cent through improved sorting practices and operational adjustments.
