Stakeholder Engagement: Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC)'s Green Products Database Pilot Project

Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) is seeking to collaborate with suppliers to pilot the development of a public, searchable Green Products Database that will facilitate the procurement of environmentally preferable and clean technology products across federal departments and agencies.

PSPC, in collaboration with Circular Innovation Council (CIC) will gather stakeholder input on existing eco-labelling programs, standards, and third-party verified data sources for each of the product categories identified below. Consultation registration links are included below.

To address the climate change in Canada, it is critical to invest in more sustainable and circular approaches. Simplifying informed purchasing decisions will accelerate demand for green and circular products and services. The Green Public Procurement Tool is a step by the Government of Canada to leverage its purchasing power to deliver on its environmental and economic objectives. CIC is pleased to be supporting PSPC in this endeavor.

Key features of the green products database

The Green Products Database will enable procurement professionals and their clients to make informed purchasing decisions on environmentally preferable and clean technology products. This is achieved by:

  • offering a wide selection of third party certified products, in categories including appliances, IT goods, office furniture, office supplies, tires, packaging, construction materials, plumbing, doors and windows, cleaning products, lighting, flooring, paints, and heating, ventilation and air circulation technologies (HVAC);
  • integrating environmental criteria such as energy efficiency, lifecycle assessments and material composition;
  • using an easy-to-navigate interface.

Green Product Database Information Session September 24th

Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) hosted an information session and demonstration of the Green Products Database on September 24th. A recording of the session is available here. The slide deck used during the info session is available here. A list of questions that were asked during the session, and their respective answers link to here.

Green Product Database Stakeholder Consultation Sessions

PSPC is seeking the input of a broad range of organizations on the customization of the Green Products Database, including but not limited to: product manufacturers, suppliers and prospective suppliers to the Government of Canada, Indigenous associations and suppliers, industry and business associations, sustainability and subject matter experts, and provincial and municipal sustainability and procurement leaders.

There are several ways to provide input, including:

  • Green Product Database Feedback Survey;
  • Virtual Category-specific consultation session (see schedule below);
  • Targeted consultation sessions with association members – reach out to us!

Benefits of participating include:

  • Providing feedback on ecolabelling programs and standards that will determine eligibility for environmentally preferable and cleantech product inclusion in the database;
  • Understanding how the database will be used – both for product options when PSPC is purchasing on behalf of or recommending goods to government clients, and to allow contractors and third parties engaged by PSPC to select building materials/components and other products from the certified product registry;
  • Understanding how inclusion in the searchable database may enable exposure to large US institutional and other private sector buyers;
  • Opportunity to identify if your products are already included in the searchable database.

Consultation Categories and Dates

We encourage a staff member managing sustainability or procurement for your organization to participate in the consultation session where possible.
