A sharing model is a very simple idea that refers to sharing a product among multiple users instead of many people owning these items themselves.
To maintain a successful sharing platform, there needs to be trust among individuals and organizations. Key enablers include transparent user policies, secure payment and return systems, user review, consistent quality assurance, and moderation, all of which ensure accountability, reliability, and a positive user experience essential for scaling sharing platforms sustainably.
Food waste is a large problem around the world. According to Second Harvest, a Toronto-based food rescue organization, Canada discards more than 46 per cent of the food it produces. The City of Edmonton has launched a pilot program with the Circular Innovation Council to help commercial users reduce their food waste. Maggie Bain is the council’s project manager.

We are thrilled to announce a new collaboration with the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) for the Circular Economy Month 2025-2026 program. The CEC focuses on strengthening the protection of the environment and fosters sustainable development across North America — for the benefit of all, today and into the future. The CEC facilitates knowledge exchange, develops resources and tools, and promotes inclusive and diverse public engagement. Since its creation in 1994, the CEC is a unique example of regional collaboration. The CEC was established by the governments of Canada, Mexico and the United States through the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation, a parallel environmental agreement to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). As of 2020, the CEC operates in accordance with the Environmental Cooperation Agreement (ECA), which entered into force at the same time as the CUSMA/T-MEC/USMCA trade agreement.
Promoting Circularity and Systemic Change
This area of the CEC’s work focuses on the transformation of the system as a whole—how our economies are designed and function. It addresses topics that advance the adoption of Circular Economy principles and promotes systemic change. Collaborating on the Circular Economy Month program supports CEC’s efforts to promote circularity and systematic change in North America.
