In our Circular Business Models series, we delve into the role of various business models in accelerating a circular economy. Previously we discussed Product Life Extension and how repairing, refurbishing, and re-manufacturing can be used to reduce embodied carbon emissions for minimizing environmental impact. In this article, we focus on Resource Recovery, and the importance of re-using existing resources in production as an alternative to disposal to avoid impacts from unnecessary extraction of new resources, retain value of existing resources, and reduce environmental impacts.
Although steps in the right direction are taken by incorporating blue box systems and other recycling programs, this principle can be scaled further through Resource Recovery models in a circular economy system – using the resources we’ve already extracted (e.g. metals, plastics, food, water) and finding innovative ways to minimize disposal, retain its value, and transform its function back into the production system.

“I found the training to be very helpful in understanding the legal requirements and in providing guidance for waste audits. It was well structured, the in-person visit to the sorting facility was well organised, and the interaction with the trainer made the online course feel dynamic. The exam covered all the aspects discussed and it was a very good way to verify the participant’s level of knowledge. This training helped me in my work and offered me useful tools. I highly recommend this course to current or future waste auditors.”

“I found CIC’s Waste Audit Training to be very informative, filled with practical knowledge and skills while providing excellent guidance on standards to apply in a waste audit. The course was very engaging, logically delivered with useful case studies. It is not only useful for those involved in auditing the waste but also for those reading the report, to better understand what it took to develop it. It will useful knowledge for my work.”
